Kisumu West MP Rosa Buyu has urged residents of South West Kisumu to prepare for forecast El Niño rains, warning that homes, crops and livestock could be at risk.
Buyu, who is seeking to become Kisumu governor in the 2027 elections, made the call while engaging residents in her home ward as part of efforts to strengthen community preparedness ahead of the expected rains.
The preparations come months after families living along the shores of Lake Victoria suffered losses during an unusual weather event that affected parts of the area.
The earlier incident destroyed crops, killed livestock and damaged homes, particularly those with corrugated iron sheet roofs.
Buyu said residents needed to remain alert and work together to reduce the impact of heavy rainfall.

“As we prepare for the rains, let us remain vigilant, look out for one another and work together to protect our families and livelihoods,” she said.
She said government support had enabled assistance to reach families affected by the earlier weather disaster.
About 1,000 households received iron sheets to replace roofing materials destroyed during the incident, she said.
“With support from the Government, we were able to reach 1,000 households with iron sheets to help replace those that had been destroyed and restore some measure of dignity and security to affected families,” Buyu said.
She thanked residents for their cooperation during the distribution exercise, saying their participation had helped ensure it was carried out smoothly.

Buyu said the experience showed the importance of community cooperation in responding to weather-related emergencies.
“The spirit throughout the exercise was clear: TUTAM, BILA KUBANDUKA!” she said.
Residents have been urged to monitor weather forecasts and take early precautions to protect their families, homes, livestock and livelihoods.
Buyu said the losses from the earlier weather event should serve as a reminder of the need for early preparation, particularly for families living near the lake and in areas vulnerable to flooding and heavy rainfall.
She also called on residents to support vulnerable households and work with government agencies as the rainy season approaches. “In God, we continue to trust,” Buyu said.
