DCCAK gives Gabriela and Baha seven days to apologise over alleged inappropriate online content

Digital content creators Sheryl Cherono, known online as Sheryl Gabriela, and Robert Mbaya, popularly known as Baha, have been ordered to issue a public apology over content deemed inappropriate that has been circulating on social media platforms.

Digital Content Creators Association of Kenya (DCCAK) Chairman Bob Ndolo said the content was inconsistent with efforts to promote a safe, professional and ethical digital environment in Kenya.

In a statement, Ndolo said responsible online behaviour was critical to building confidence among corporate advertisers and encouraging investment in Kenya’s growing digital content industry.

The association, which advocates for the interests of content creators, warned that obscene, pornographic or hate driven material could damage the reputation of the sector and discourage brands from investing in digital advertising.

“Content that is obscene, pornographic or promotes hate driven narratives undermines the credibility of Kenya’s digital content industry and discourages many corporate brands from investing in digital advertising,” Ndolo said.

DCCAK has given the two creators seven days to apologise publicly through their digital platforms.

The association said failure to comply could lead to the matter being referred to relevant regulatory authorities, including the Communications Authority of Kenya, for possible action.

It added that it could also engage social media companies, including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X and YouTube, over content removal and possible account restrictions where violations of laws or platform policies are established.

Ndolo said the warning was a reminder to all digital creators to use online platforms responsibly and within the law, particularly as Kenya heads towards the 2027 General Election period.

DCCAK also said it was monitoring other individuals, including content creator Kanini and others, over concerns about material that may breach acceptable standards.

“Social media platforms are not places for pornography or hate-driven narratives,” Ndolo said.

The associationfurther urged creators to uphold professionalism, responsibility and respect for the law.
